Coaching Introduction
Coaches Are A Valuable Resource
Coaches are at the heart of our AYSO organization, because as coach you
have the most contact with the kids. Coaching requires that you commit to
two afternoons or early evenings per week for practice sessions, plus the
game on Saturday. In addition to your prep time, dealing with team matters
and input to the region, this is a significant commitment of time. Costa
Mesa Region 120 AYSO deeply appreciates the commitment from each and every
coach and hopes to provide you with advice and assistance to make your
coaching experience a positive one.
Your Typical AYSO Coach
There is no typical AYSO Coach. Each individual brings their own unique
qualities, experiences and abilities to the program and the team they are
charged with handling. A successful AYSO Coach may have all or some of
these orientations:
Those with a social orientation want to go out and have a great time. The
main objective is that the kids have fun both at practice and at the
game. They may have limited soccer experience or non at all, but
they are willing to give of their time and willing to benefit from the
region's assistance and training.
Those with a task orientation generally have experience in soccer that
they want to pass on. They are into teaching and helping players develop
better skills over the course of a season.
Finally the goal orientation wants to see results. Yes winning, but so
much more is involved in getting the team to show a continued level of
improvement.
Actually, most coaches bring some degree of each orientation to our
program. So whether you are a skilled soccer veteran or a new parent who
just loves to work with kids, AYSO has a place for you and you can count
on us to give you training, skills and ideas that will make your coaching
experience a positive one for both yourself and your team & their
parents.
Why Should I Coach?
- It's Rewarding
- It's Fun
- It's Giving Back
All of our AYSO Coaches lead busy lives. Whether you're an executive,
student, housewife or retired, coaching can be a rewarding experience.
Maybe its watching that 5 year old in Division 7 scoring their first goal
or seeing your team work a play to perfection that you practiced all week.
It's rewarding to share in the sense of accomplishment when you can
look back on a season with your players and their families and see how far
you've come during the season.
Sure, as a coach you put in plenty of hours during the course of a
season, but along the way its the enjoyment and its the fun of working
with the kids that often makes it worth all the effort.
And, what better way can you give back to your community then by
sharing your time and talents in the lives or our youth. Coaching provides
the opportunity to give back to the community which serves not only to
make kids better in a variety of ways, but also makes you a better person
too.
How Old and Experienced Do I Need To Be?
Our region coaches range from the "old pros" to new rookies. All
bring a variety of abilities and experience to their team and range from
Senior Citizens to High School age. The important thing is a
willingness to give it your best effort. If you need help, the region is
there to support you through clinics and other training
opportunities.
How Do I Become A Coach?
If you have a child that is already on a team which has a coach, just let
the coach know that you're interested in coaching and would like to help.
This is a great way to start gaining some experience and all of our
coaches would be delighted to use you.
If you are interested in coaching during the upcoming 1998 season, you
can contact our Director of Coaches or volunteer when you register your
child.
You're Not Out There Alone
Region 120 strives to make sure our coaches have all the assistance they
need and provide training clinics and other events to assist the coaches
throughout the year. The region had educational videos and books covering
drills, plays, team management etc. Contact your Regional
Coach Administrator to obtain this information. Make sure you check
out both our website and the Touchline newsletter for information on all
the ways we can help make this a successful and rewarding season for you
as a coach.
