I knew Brian McMillan. He
was a friend of mind. It was 12 years ago that he gave me a special
blue referee jersey and said, “wear it on special occasions”. Another
friend of mine, Joe Boustani, the Traveling Team coach at that time,
came up with idea of having a tournament over Labor Day as a fund-raiser
for his team. He wanted to call the tournament the Brian McMillan
Invitational. It was a very small tournament that first year, with only
two flights of girls and two flights of boys teams. Two fields
used were Balearic, and two fields at Estancia.
Brian McMillan was able to come out
to the tournament that year with his wife Karen. Brian was restricted
to a wheel chair at that point in his failing health, but he commanded
the same attention, adoration, and respect that he was known for. It
was a very special day, and the first day for the blue jersey. Brian
died a few weeks later.
Every year I’ve worn that blue
jersey, on the annual occasion of our special tournament. Brian's
reference to the players as little ladies and gentlemen remind me often
that AYSO is about the kids and their developing bodies and minds.
It’s what we do now with these kids that will have very long and lasting
impressions and impact—Brian understood that. You can tell who
else understands that when they say AYSO by spelling the letters.
Those who say it like a word leave out the “Y”, and as I say, “why” are
we here?...for the Youth!
So I hope you enjoy your experience
this year as we celebrated our tournament commemorating Brian McMillan. To those who didn’t know Brian, this may have seemed like
just another soccer tournament—but for those who knew or have since
heard of him, this tournament is known as a celebration of what we do in
AYSO—and thanks for celebrating with us!
